PROS & CONS OF VANLIFE
The Pros and Cons of Vanlife:
Vanlife has become an increasingly popular lifestyle choice for many, offering freedom, adventure, and a unique way to explore the world. Among the various options available, the Thor Scope 18M stands out as a compact and versatile van designed for those looking to embrace this way of living. However, like any lifestyle choice, vanlife comes with its own set of pros and cons. I wanted to explore the advantages and disadvantages of living in a Thor Scope 18M and vanlife in general, with YOU!
The Pros
1. Compact and Maneuverable:
The Thor Scope 18M is built on a more compact platform, making it easier to navigate through tight city streets and rural roads alike. This maneuverability allows for greater flexibility in choosing travel destinations and parking options. It’s only like 17 feet 11 inches long, about 9 feet tall (AC / Solar Panel make it taller), and less than 7 feet wide. And yes, I have parked in those spaces marked, “Compact” retracted our mirrors and we fit perfect.
2. Versatile Living Space:
The interior of the Thor Scope 18M is designed to maximize space. With a full kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping area, it provides all the essential amenities for comfortable living. The layout is efficient, making it a great option for solo travelers or couples. You do have to learn the tricks of the trade to stay orgainized!
3. Cost-Effective Travel:
Vanlife often reduces accommodation costs, as you can park in campgrounds, RV parks, or even free camping spots. The Thor Scope 18M is equipped with features that allow for off-grid camping, further minimizing expenses related to travel.
4. Connection to Nature:
Living in a van allows for a closer connection to the great outdoors. You can wake up to beautiful landscapes, enjoy hiking and outdoor activities, and experience different climates and environments without the need for hotel stays.
5. Flexible Lifestyle:
Vanlife offers the freedom to travel at your own pace. With the Thor Scope 18M, you can easily change your itinerary, explore new places, and embrace spontaneity. This flexibility can lead to unique experiences and adventures.
6. Community and Camaraderie:
The vanlife community is vibrant and welcoming. Many van dwellers share tips, stories, and resources, fostering a sense of belonging and support among those who choose this lifestyle.
The Cons
1. Limited Space:
While the compact design of the Thor Scope 18M allows for easy maneuverability, it also means limited living space. This can be challenging for those who are used to larger homes, as storage and personal space may be constrained. Again, if you learn the tricks of the trade, think of ways outside the box, you will be fine!
2. Maintenance and Repairs:
Owning a van requires regular maintenance and occasional repairs. Issues with plumbing, electrical systems, or the engine can arise, leading to unexpected costs and the need for repairs while on the road. Anyone who follows our YouTube channel or stops by the website to read our articles knows about the issues we have had, but they are fixed now, and we are off and running, well driving, I meant to say!
3. Isolation and Loneliness:
While vanlife can provide a sense of freedom, it can also lead to feelings of isolation. Long periods without social interaction, especially for those traveling solo, can be difficult and may lead to loneliness. I experienced this once while visiting the Petrified Forest NP, watch our video!
4. Regulations and Parking:
Finding suitable places to park and camp can be a challenge. Many urban areas have strict regulations against overnight parking, and not all campgrounds may have availability or suitable amenities. And it seems sometimes, campgrounds like to put the vans in a “small” spot? This has happened only a couple of times, but we were able to work it out. Most of the time we find ourselves in a huge spot and are like, “Look at our tiny van sitting in this huge camping spot!”
5. Weather Challenges:
Living in a van means you are more exposed to the elements. Extreme weather conditions can pose challenges, from extreme heat to cold temperatures, which can affect comfort and livability. Keeping the heater going, gotta stay up to date with maintenance! Hail storms, well any vehicle it is scary! But when you’re living in your van, its your home its even scarier!
6. Financial Considerations:
While vanlife can be cost-effective, it can also require significant upfront investment for the van and necessary modifications. Budgeting for fuel, maintenance, insurance, and potential repairs is essential to avoid financial strain. Lucky for me I have Amy, my wife, who is fantastic at this!
Vanlife, particularly in a vehicle like the Thor Scope 18M, offers a unique blend of adventure, freedom, and connection to nature. However, it also presents challenges that potential vanlifers must consider. Whether the pros outweigh the cons will depend largely on individual preferences, lifestyle choices, and adaptability. For those willing to embrace the journey, vanlife can be a rewarding and enriching experience, allowing for a life filled with exploration and discovery.
